The government of Australia is providing tremendous facilities to those studying in regional institutions. Along with the opportunity to work for one more year after studies, they will also get a scholarship of about 7 lakh rupees every year.
There has been a huge increase in the number of Indian students going to study in Australia in the last year. During the year 2018, more than one lakh Indian students enrolled in educational institutions of Australia. This is 12.4 percent of the total international enrollment of Indian students. There has been a 25% increase in admissions this year as compared to last year.
Australia had announced the ‘Additional Temporary Graduate’ visa. It entitles international students who graduate from a regional campus of a registered university to work in Australia for an additional year after their studies. According to the current rule, students studying up to Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Australia get a work visa for 2 years after their studies.
A new scholarship scheme was announced by the Prime Minister of Australia, Scott Morrison. The scheme was meant to attract Australian and international students to study in other areas of Australia. Local and international students will receive approximately A$15,000 per year.
The Australian government has killed two birds with one stone by giving students a one-year post-study work visa. This will help in reducing congestion from areas of Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Brisbane, and Gold Coast. Since these are more popular areas, most of the international students and workers turn to these cities, which increases the population here. The new visa has a provision to study in regional institutions. This will allow students to move away from popular areas of Australia and live in other areas, which will greatly reduce the congestion in the main cities.
Another advantage of Australia is that more and more students will reach there to study. As students will get a chance to stay for one more year after their studies, it will be a convenient situation for them.
People associated with the job and education sector in Australia have expressed happiness over the students getting an extra year. Zahira Ismail, managing director of an immigration service company, said, “Giving an extra year to graduates shows that policymakers are understanding the problems of students. Most of the jobs ask for at least three years of experience, while according to the current visa rules, students here get visas only for 2 years after studies.
Many students wish to stay and work in the host country for a longer period of time. In this regard, Cyrus Mistry, director of EasyMigrate Consultancy Services, told our associate newspaper TOI, ‘The new regional visa will be attractive for international students. There is an option to take permanent residency after three years. For students who want to settle there after their studies, it will be a very attractive option.
