The University of Chicago is a private research university located in Chicago, Illinois. Its primary campus is located in Chicago’s Hyde Park neighborhood. As one of the best colleges in the world and one of the most selective in the nation, the University of Chicago is regularly mentioned.

Under the bleachers of the university’s Stagg Field, in Chicago’s Metallurgical Laboratory’s Chicago Pile-1, the first artificial, self-sustaining nuclear reaction was produced.
Chemical developments allowed for the “radiocarbon revolution” in carbon-14 dating of ancient life and objects. University research programs are all involved in the operation of the Argonne National Laboratory, Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, and Marine Biological Laboratory. The university is also home to The University of Chicago Press, the largest campus press in the nation.
The 217-acre main campus of the University of Chicago is situated in the Hyde Park and Woodlawn neighborhoods of Chicago, roughly eight miles south of the city’s downtown. The campus’ northern and southern halves are divided by the Midway Plaisance, a huge linear park constructed for the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition. In 2011, Travel+Leisure ranked the university as having one of the most beautiful college campuses in the United States.

The College, five graduate research divisions, six professional schools, and the Graham School of Continuing Liberal and Professional Studies make up the University of Chicago’s academic bodies. The institution also manages a number of laboratories, including the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, Argonne National Laboratory, and the Marine Biological Laboratory, as well as a library system, the University of Chicago Press, and the University of Chicago Medical Center.
The academic year at the university is divided into four terms: summer, autumn, winter, and spring, according to a quarter system. Before their quarterly academic breaks, full-time undergraduate students study three to four courses every quarter for roughly eleven weeks. The traditional start and end dates for the school year are late September and mid-June.

Over the past 20 years, the University of Chicago’s admissions process has evolved to become extremely selective, reflecting shifts in the application process, school acceptance rates, and marketing tactics. From 1996 to 2022, the college’s acceptance rate dropped from 71% to 4.9%.
The average MCAT score for students joining the Pritzker School of Medicine class of 2024 was 580, and the middle 50% band of SAT scores for the undergraduate class of 2025 ranged from 1510 to 1570.
