Chartered by the Connecticut Colony, the Collegiate School was founded in 1701 by the clergy to educate Congregational ministers before moving to New Haven in 1716. Originally limited to theology and sacred languages, the curriculum began to include the humanities and sciences by the time of the American Revolution. In the 19th century, the college expanded into graduate and professional education, awarding the first PhDs in the United States in 1861 and Organized as a university in 1887. Yale’s faculty and student population grew rapidly after 1890 with the expansion of the physical campus and scientific research. ,
The third-largest academic library in the United States, Yale University Libraries, which serves all constituent institutions, has about 15 million books. Students that compete in the NCAA Division I competitions represent Yale Bulldogs in the Ivy League. As it had for each of the previous sixteen years, Yale was rated third among national colleges in the United States by U.S. News & World Report in 2016. The New England Commission of Higher Education has granted Yale University accreditation.
Yale was placed tenth in the 2016-17 Nature Index for the quality of scientific research output, tenth in the 2016 CWUR World University Rankings, and eleventh in the 2016 Academic Ranking of World Universities. The university was also ranked eighth in the Academic World Reputation Rankings and sixth in the 2016 Times Higher Education Global University Employability Rankings. According to SCImago Institutions Rankings, it was placed 27th among all universities in the globe in 2019.
The Yale ideal in the early 19th century was embodied by the Revolutionary War veteran Nathan Hale. He was a manly yet aristocratic scholar who was equally knowledgeable about sports and knowledge, and a patriot who “regretted” that he “had but one life to lose” for his country. Frederic Remington was a Western painter whose works celebrated the battles and physical challenges of the Wild West. The fictional Frank Merriwell, a Yale student around the turn of the 20th century, personified this heroic ideal without regard for race, while Frank Stover, Merriwell’s successor in the book Stover at Yale, challenged the commercial culture that had taken hold at the institution. As winning the big game became the focus of the school year, more and more students looked to athletes as role models.
From 1701 to 1823, Yale was the sole institution in Connecticut, and it educated the sons of the affluent. Playing cards, traveling to bars, damaging college property, and disobeying college authorities were all punishable infractions for students. While Yale had youth and zeal on its side at the time, Harvard stood out for the stability and maturity of its tutor corps.
Numerous private student clubs that were only accessible by invitation emerged as a result of the focus placed on classics and served largely as discussion platforms for contemporary research, literature, and politics. Debating societies were the first of these groups; Crotona was founded in 1738, Livonia in 1753, and Brothers in Unity in 1768. Brothers in Unity and Livonia are still around today, and there are celebrations for both of them.
